Book Review – iOS Sensor Apps with Arduino

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

iOS Sensor Apps with Arduino provides a concise introduction to the possibilities of interfacing Arduino with iOS.

Much of the book concentrates on the Redpark serial cable. This cable simplifies many of the headaches involved with interfacing with iOS devices.

With the Redpark serial cable, things appear to be reasonably plain sailing, with the author providing step by step instructions to building a simple application that interfaces with Arduino, takes a reading from a sensor and plots it on the iPhone.

The book includes a number of useful tips along the way that may not be obvious to the beginner, such as how to easily track the log messages generated by the Arduino.

Finally, the book covers other communication options, if you don’t want to use the Redpark serial cable. This includes:

  • Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi
  • X-Bee
  • The microphone (a la Square)
  • USB; and
  • Midi

This is a short, readable book that covers the essentials; recommended if you want to get started in this area, particularly if you intend on using the Redpark serial cable for your interfacing requirements.

We now support

  • an iPhone app, and
  • 50 songs!

Supernifty’s Playalong has songs from each of the last seven decades.

Here’s a selection of tag counts from Supernifty’s first fifty songs.

Smartphone Market Penetration

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Some stats from ComScore illustrate the state of the mobile market. This post provides some simple charts of the data.

What’s the breakdown of smartphone market share?

Smartphone Market Share January 2010

Clearly BlackBerry are doing incredibly well, covering almost half the market.

Which platform’s been growing the most over the last 3 months?

Smartphone Growth (Millions) from October 2009 to January 2010

Somewhat surprisingly, BlackBerry continue to consolidate their position, taking most of the new entrants to the market.

Interestingly, in the original statistics, Google appear to be doing the best, and Microsoft the worst. However, in terms of actual numbers, BlackBerry continue to be number 1 for growth, with Microsoft and Palm equal losers.

These stats are based on the US market. Visit ComScore for the original figures.

Biggest Loser BMI data

Once you’ve fired up the app, simply click on “Download”, choose “Biggest Loser 2009″ and voila, you have the Biggest Loser dataset available on Celebrity BMI. One thing that is immediately obvious is the spectacular amount of weight all contestants managed to lose, and how spectacularly unhealthy they were at the start of the show.

Whether you use this for your own inspiration, to compare to your own efforts or to marvel at what a motivated person is capable of, hopefully you’ll find this dataset useful. If there is sufficient interest, other Biggest Loser results will be added to the application.
